Beekeeper Christina Simmons holds a frame full of bees June 13 at Nottingham Bees, a honey farm in Grand Prairie. As the bee population declines, people can help protect their numbers by planting bee-friendly plants, such as chaste trees and wildflowers, and by using less pesticides.


When her son had the opportunity to choose between keeping goats or bees, Michelle Boerst opted for the latter.

While in middle school, her son, Tim Boerst, involved himself in Future Farmers of America. Since Michelle Boerst was always interested in bees, the two chose beekeeping as not only their next project, but a new hobby.

“I’m always up for anything,” she said.
